Make image background transparent
Turn any photo into a transparent PNG. The AI finds the subject and removes everything else, leaving a clean cutout you can layer over any design.
How to make an image background transparent
This page opens the editor with no background and the PNG format already selected. You can change any of them.
- Add your image. Drop a photo on the page or choose one from your device. JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC are all accepted.
- Let the AI work. The background is removed in one or two seconds. Drag the slider to compare with the original.
- Download as PNG. Keep Background set to None and choose PNG as the format. The transparent areas will show whatever is behind the image in your design.
When you need a transparent background
A transparent background means the image has no backdrop at all. Instead of white or a color, the area around the subject is empty, so whatever you place the image on shows through. Designers use transparent PNGs for logos on websites, product images on marketplace listings, stickers in messaging apps, and layers in Photoshop or Canva.
JPG cannot store transparency. It always fills empty areas with a solid color, usually white. That is why the format matters: choose PNG or WebP when you need the cutout to blend with a new background in another app. If you want a finished image with a new background already applied, you can pick White, Color, Blur, or Photo in the editor and download a JPG instead.
The AI handles most subjects well on its own. Tricky areas like glass, thin wires, and see-through fabric may need a pass with Touch up. Erase clears leftover background pixels, and Restore brings back parts of the subject the AI removed by mistake.
Questions about transparent background
Why does my transparent PNG show a white background in some apps?
Some apps and image viewers do not display transparency and show white instead. The file is still transparent; open it in a design tool like Canva, Figma, or Photoshop to see the checkerboard.
Can I make a logo background transparent?
Yes. Switch Mode to Plain background and use Auto. It removes the color around the logo and keeps the sharp edges of the letters and shapes.
What is the difference between PNG and WebP for transparency?
Both support transparency. WebP files are smaller, but some older programs cannot open them. PNG works everywhere.
Can I add a different background after making it transparent?
Yes. In the editor, switch Background from None to White, Color, Blur, or Photo. Or download the transparent PNG and place it in your own design.
