Fix cutout edges and choose an export

Updated October 10, 2026 · Arunvpp

A usable cutout needs both a correct outline and the right output file. Diagnose the outline while comparing with the original, then check the download preview. It shows the composition at a smaller size; inspect the saved file for full-size edges and dimensions. A transparent preview alone does not mean a JPG export will be transparent.

Find the cause before painting

Common symptoms and useful next steps
SymptomLikely causeTry next
A whole hand, strap, or ear is missingThe AI grouped it with the background.Compare another AI mode. If only one area is wrong, use Restore to bring it back from the source.
Fine hair has a pale or colored fringeSource edge pixels contain some of the old background.Compare Best quality on black and white. Erase obvious remnants carefully; keep partially transparent strands.
The inside of an O or A is still filledAuto removes backdrop connected to the border; the letter encloses that space.Use Remove a color, then check that the same color inside the logo has not been removed.
Signature strokes are brokenFaint ink and shaded paper have similar brightness.Lower Strength in Signature mode. If that brings back too much paper, retake the photo in more even light.
A glass bottle contains old backdrop colorsThe original background is visible through or reflected in the object.Keep the real bottle outline. Reshoot against the intended neutral background if internal reflections are unacceptable.

Blanket erasing around the whole subject often makes hair and fabric look unnaturally hard. Work on the specific problem area. If the subject is out of focus, partly outside the frame, or hidden behind something else, a brush cannot reconstruct the missing detail.

Use Erase and Restore in small passes

  1. Open Touch up and zoom into the problem. Keep enough of the surrounding image visible to recognize the real edge.
  2. Choose Erase for leftover background. Use a smaller brush near a finger, lace, whisker, or letter stroke.
  3. Choose Restore for missing parts. Restore brings back source pixels, including any source background under the brush, so avoid sweeping outside the subject.
  4. Undo a stroke that goes too far. Zoom back out and check the result at the size people will actually view it.

Temporarily change Background to Black and then White while checking soft edges. Return it to None if your final file should be transparent. A background color can help reveal a defect without becoming part of the intended export.

Choose the format for its destination

What each export keeps
FormatTransparencyUseful for
PNGYes, with Background set to NoneLogos, signatures, and layers in another design. Preserves sharp lines without JPEG compression.
WebPYes, with Background set to NoneWeb images when the receiving site or app accepts the format. Check file size and fine-detail quality in the preview.
JPGNo; None is filled with whiteFinished photos with a white, colored, blurred, or photo backdrop. Fine letters and ink may show compression artifacts.

PNG does not automatically mean a transparent background: exporting a PNG while White or Photo is selected keeps that backdrop. Conversely, a viewer may display a transparent PNG on white. Place the downloaded file over a colored layer to tell a viewer’s canvas from a white rectangle saved into the file.

Check working dimensions, crop, and presets

The Original preset is described as Working image size. It uses the working image dimensions, which may be lower than the input dimensions if the editor reduced a large photo for memory. Crop to subject trims empty space and keeps a little padding. Square and story presets fit the subject into a fixed canvas while preserving its proportions; they do not stretch it to fill every edge.

For a profile picture, preview 1080×1080 and keep the face far enough from the edge for the destination’s circular crop. For a product catalog, try 2000×2000 with Crop to subject off for a consistent margin. For a design layer, keep PNG with None and choose Original (Working image size), then set Crop to subject according to how much empty space you need.

The 600×600 preset is simply a square export. It does not check official ID framing, head size, or whether image editing is permitted by an application. Follow the destination’s current photo instructions before deciding to use an edited image.

Check the saved file before closing

When enabled, Recent downloads keeps up to 12 single-image results in this browser. Older results are replaced when that limit is reached. Entries older than 30 days are removed the next time history is viewed or a result is saved; browser storage may also disappear earlier. Batch output is held in the open batch panel and does not enter that history. Download your ZIP before closing or reloading the page.
