Choose a background removal mode
Updated October 10, 2026 · Arunvpp
The useful first question is whether the background is one consistent color or part of a photograph. Plain background removes colors; Fast and Best quality estimate which pixels belong to the main subject. Choosing the wrong method can remove part of a logo or leave an entire photographic backdrop in place.
Choose a mode from the image
| Image | Start with | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A person or solid product in a scene | Fast: U²-Net small, about 4.4 MB | Missing limbs, handles, or spaces between the subject and background. Switch modes if the mask is wrong. |
| Curly hair, fine fur, or a detailed outline | Best quality: BiRefNet-lite, about 94 MB | Fine edges against both light and dark backgrounds. A larger model can help but does not recover hidden or blurred detail. |
| A logo on a flat white or colored box | Plain background → Auto | Auto removes matching background connected to the image border. Enclosed spaces in letters may remain filled. |
| A flat backdrop inside and outside a shape | Plain background → Remove a color | This removes matching color throughout the image, including parts of the artwork that use it. |
| Dark ink on plain, evenly lit paper | Plain background → Signature | Raise Strength to clear gray paper; lower it if faint strokes disappear. Avoid shadows across the page. |
Plain background needs no AI model download. It works best when the backdrop color is uniform; a textured wall, gradient, or unevenly lit paper does not have one removable color. For a white object on white, removing white everywhere will also remove the object. Try an AI mode or take a new photo with more contrast.
Compare modes on the same image
- Load the portrait or sneaker sample from the editor and run Fast. Drag the comparison slider to find missing or leftover areas.
- Set the background to Black, then White. A pale halo can be hard to see on white; missing dark detail can be hard to see on black.
- Switch to Best quality and compare those same areas. Choose the result that keeps the subject’s real outline, rather than assuming the larger model always wins.
- For a logo or signature sample, use Plain background instead. Check enclosed letters and faint pen strokes before changing Strength.
Processing time includes two different jobs: downloading the model on first use and running it on your image. Network speed affects the first; device capacity, browser, and execution backend affect the second. Best quality can use WebGPU when the browser and graphics hardware support it. If that fails, the tool can fall back to the CPU, which may be much slower.
Working resolution and batch limits
The editor reduces large inputs before processing. Its device profile uses available memory and processor information, with conservative estimates when the browser does not expose that information. The limits are based on that profile rather than simply whether you use a phone or computer.
| Capacity | Maximum working long side | Files per batch |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 2048 pixels | 10 |
| Medium | 3072 pixels | 20 |
| High | 4096 pixels | 40 |
When an image is reduced, the editor displays its working dimensions beside its original dimensions. The Original preset, described as Working image size, uses that working image, so it cannot promise the input’s original pixel count. Choosing a larger square preset creates a larger canvas; it does not add captured detail. Extremely large source images can also be refused before decoding to avoid exhausting memory.
JPG, PNG, and WebP are useful starting formats. Other inputs depend on the browser’s image decoder. If a HEIC photo cannot open, export a JPG copy and try again. The tool edits still images; it does not remove a video background.
Prepare and check offline use
Visiting the page once does not necessarily download every model or runtime. While online, process a sample using the mode you will need, allow the download to finish, and reload the site so its service worker can cache the application files. Then disconnect and process another image as a check.
Offline use depends on the browser retaining the page, runtime, and selected model. Private browsing, storage limits, or clearing site data can remove those files. A different mode may still need its first download. Keep important results as downloaded files rather than relying on browser storage.
